Strain birefringence is exhibited around original notches and artificial notches in tekite surfaces. Similar strain is exhibited by a specimen which was quenched in an air stream from 1000°C indicating that the strain is the result of cooling. The presence of strain, however, does not determine whether the surfcial grooves were formed before or after the cooling of the tektite.
