THE vapour pressure of mercury at room temperature (~10-3 mm) is high enough to necessitate the use of a protective cold trap in vacuum systems where the surface properties of solids are under investigation. Most students of gas adsorption and catalytic processes adopt this precaution, although the practice is by no means universal. Indeed, where the study of condensable vapours is involved it may be necessary to utilize alternative protective devices (for example, gold foil) or to eliminate mercury from the system entirely.
