Global data for 1955-1978 and European data for 1930-1978 are used to study the spectrum of geomagnetic-field variations in the range of periods of more than 1 year and less than 10 years. It is shown that this spectrum contains only two maxima (19 and 41 months), and that the variations corresponding to these periods are due to external sources produced by the uniform field over the whole surface of the earth. The spectrum investigated does not include variations associated with processes in the liquid core of the earth; hence, the shortest period of variations of the internal source penetrating to the earth's surface amounts to about 11 years.
