The Heterodyne Instrument for the Far-Infrared (RIFT) is a heterodyne spectrometer being built for the European Space Agency's Herschel Space Observatory, with seven receiver channels covering the 480-1250 and 1410-1910 GHz frequency ranges. This paper provides an overview of the HIFI Focal Plane Unit (FPU) design, with particular emphasis placed upon an overview of the primary elements in the FPU's signal chain.
