A method is given for the analytical construction of a fairly broad class of potential-density pairs that can be useful as realistic models for spherical star clusters. In particular, two families are worked out in some detail. The first family contains both Hénon's and Plummer's model as special cases. The second in addition allows for density distributions with exponential behaviour at large radii rather than the usual power laws. The construction of the isotropic distribution function is in the general case reduced to a numerical quadrature of a function in analytical form, but in some cases complete analytical results can be obtained.
