Our understanding of the nature of Sgr A* has evolved rather rapidly since the early 90's, in part due to the growing interest among theorists and to a growing body of observational constraints. We will briefly review what now appears to be widely accepted, and highlight the areas where the observational uncertainties allow for a variance of assumptions that may lead to different interpretations.
