Interstellar pickup protons strongly influence the properties of the outer heliosphere and their effects scale with the density of inflowing hydrogen at the termination shock. In order to estimate this quantity from available measurements of the pickup protons, we need to understand the observed structure and transport of these ion distributions. We review the recent work in this area and its application to the properties of the distant solar wind.
