Chandra Proposal Id #03500727

Scientific paper

We propose to observe the afterglow of a bright, high latitude Gamma-Ray Burst with Chandra/LETGS, for a total of 100 ksec. The key objective of this observation is the acquisition of the first sensitive soft X-ray emission spectrum of a GRB afterglow. With it, we will measure the relative abundances of the alpha-elements with respect to Fe, and directly address the viability of models that associate GRB's with the core collapse of massive stars.
