In previous determinations of the temperature of the lightning stroke the assumption has been made that the stroke temperature remains constant during the time of the lightning stroke. Since this is not the case, average lightning temperatures have been calculated. It is shown that the procedure of calculating lightning temperature by assuming the stroke temperature to be constant yields a temperature which is lower than, but within 10 per cent of, the actual peak lightning temperature. Since numerous errors are present in determining the experimental spectral intensities, the temperature value obtained assuming the lightning temperature to be constant can be considered a reasonable approximation to the peak lightning temperature.
