A self-consistent solution is presented for the problem of the localization of the Saturn kilometric radio source. The analysis presented here makes no a priori assumption concerning the emission directivity. The only assumptions are that there are two sources of emission, each emitting in one circular polarization, and that the global variations of the polarization are due to occultations of the sources by the planet. The solution confirms the previous localizations of the active magnetic lines from which the radiation is emitted in each hemisphere. The results also show that the Voyager data cannot determine unambiguously the spatial extent of the radio source as a function of frequency.
