From the present discussion, it appears that the best evidence for the existence of a relationship between the solar cycle and the ozone layer is provided by data on the upper stratosphere, where this relationship is most probable also from theoretical considerations. However, particularly with regard to the phase problem, this relationship is not completely clear. Correlation coefficients, computed from monthly values of the sunspot number and ozone concentration (smoothed by a filter technique) are plotted and discussed. The correlation is considerably weaker if the original monthly means are used. Not unexpectedly, the reduction is greater in the lower stratosphere, where small-scale regional effects are more pronounced. The relatively smaller differences in the higher layers point to a larger time rate of the variations. This is a certain indication (in the case of a high correlation), but by no means a proof, for a solar cycle influence.
