Quasi-critical rays (Pedersen rays) in the upper shortwave range play an important part in ionospheric waveguide excitation and one-skip propagation over 3000 to 4000 km paths. A characteristic of the propagation is the critical angle of elevation, i.e., the angle of the ray that separates reflected and refracted rays. This angle is needed in the calculation of long paths by Gurevich's (1973) adiabatic invariant method and also in the selection of propagation modes on the basis of antenna radiation patterns. Calculation of Pedersen's angle by integrating numerically the ray equations is extremely time consuming. In the present paper, an operational method for calculating Pedersen's angle for actual ionospheric conditions is proposed.
