The torque exerted on a rotating magnet by impinging plasma was derived from certain general assumptions plus conservation laws. Its relevance to binary evolution (neutron stars, white dwarfs, and in particular binary X-ray sources AM Her, 4U 0115+63, SS 433), to the generation of cosmic rays, and to the (early) planets and their satellites is explained.
