The magnetosheath plasma properties observed in the subsonic region and near the polar cusps, i.e. in regions where the flow deviates from the predictions of the axisymmetric gasdynamic model, are discussed. Stagnating flow, depletion, and turbulence in the subsonic region are dealt with. Plasma in the exterior cusp is then described. Observations from HEOS-2 are used to support the discussion.
