Understanding the effect of the LSST design on the signal-to-noise ratio of individual exposures and on overall survey depth in the LSST ugrizy bands has been the primary motivation for developing a detailed Exposure Time Calculator for LSST. The ETC models the detailed telescope optics, filter transmission curves, and CCD response according to the most recent work of the Camera Design Team. The ETC also incorporates a recent sky brightness study done with data taken at CTIO, UKIRT, and SDSS. A sky brightness model has been developed to predict background at the proposed Cerro Pachon site.
The Exposure Time Calculator allows the source spectral energy distribution, surface brightness profile, and redshift to be varied, and includes a library of stellar and extra-galactic source spectra. After source and background spectra are modified for atmospheric effects, the ETC estimates signal-to-noise ratio for a given exposure time, and exposure time to achieve a threshold signal-to-noise ratio. The aperture over which background and source measurements are made can be specified, and an option for psf-weighted photometry is provided.
