Relations for the elements of the 4x4 scattering matrix of a collection
of randomly oriented particles are discussed. Special attention is given
to exact forward and backward scattering by rotationally symmetric
particles. It is shown that in these cases the number of independent
elements of the scattering matrix is only 2.
