A fourth-order gravitational field equation is used for the case of a static field. Useful expressions for the scalar curvature and the potential are obtained by assuming the space to be nearly flat. The expression for the potential shows the existence of a short-range gravitational field and the possibility of explaining the large redshift of quasars.
