In addition to neutron star, NS, cooling, different mechanisms might power the X-ray emission of quiescent soft X-ray transients, SXRTs: a. accretion onto the NS surface or, b. down to the magnetosphere; c. shock emission from the wind of a turned-on radio pulsar. In cases a. and b. the harder X-ray emission originates close to the NS, while in case c. over binary separation scales. A 60 ks XMM observation of the eclipsing SXRT 4U 2129+47 will unambiguously determine the production site of this emission, shedding light on the physics of fast spinning, weakly magnetic neutron stars subject to low mass inflow rates.
