We propose a deep multi-use observation of M101 that exploits the strengths of XMM to produce an unprecedented view of the diffuse emission in M101. The Chandra mega-second observation of M101 has shown that the diffuse emission traces the UV emission seen by the XMM-OM,and the hardness ratio is constant from 1 to 6 kpc. With a 120 ks XMM observation in addition to archival observations, we expect to trace the diffuse emission and to measure the hardness ratio to radii of 16 kpc, the radius of the strongly star-forming disk. By splitting the exposure into 6 pieces taken over the course of a year we will also be able to monitor the temporal variation of the luminous and ultra-luminous (ULX) source population.
