A 40 ks XMM-Newton observation of IRAS 13197-1627, the nearest and brightest known type II QSO, is requested. The BeppoSAX X-ray spectrum of the source is dominated by complex features possibly linked to different emission and/or absorption mechanisms. The BeppoSAX data also show several analogies between the X-ray properties of IRAS 13197-1627 and those of the Narrow Lines Seyfert 1s. Our goals are to use the sensibility and spectral capabilities of XMM-Newton to investigate: i) the presence of an extreme relativistic line in a type II QSO; ii) the spectral and variability properties of the source to be compared with X-ray characteristics of Narrow Line Sey 1s; iii) the presence of an outflow suggested by the BeppoSAX detection of an absorption line at Esim7.5 keV.
