ROSAT has discovered a small group of X-ray dim isolated neutron stars with well defined and unique characteristics. The nature of these sources and the origin of the soft X-ray emission is not clear. A crucial role in determining their nature and understanding their physics is played by the magnetic field and its decay. The isolated neutron star RBS1223 displays clear evidence of a strong magnetic field, an X-ray cyclotron absorption line, X-ray pulsations, and pronounced temperature changes as a function of pulse period. We propose detailed X-ray monitoring observations in order to uniquely determine the spin period history between 1997 and 2005, determine the period derivative and thus confirm the field estimate from X-ray spectroscopy.
