Chandra and XMM observations of 1E 1207.4-5209, the central compact object in the SNR PKS 1209--51/52, led to the discoveries of its 424 ms spin period and prominent absorption lines in its thermal-like X-ray spectrum, which provided an exciting opportunity to measure the gravitational redshift at the surface of a neutron star. These observations, spread over a 3.5 yr period, have also revealed an intriguing nonmonotonous behavior of the spin period. To understand the nature of this enigmatic object, we propose a series of observations with the XMM EPIC detectors.
