The evidence suggesting that the SNC-class meteorites are of Martian origin is discussed. The igneous character of the meteorites, their relative youth (1300 million years), and the fact that they appear to have been subjected to intense shock waves about 180 million years ago imply a volcanic origin on and meteorite-impact launching from a not-too-distant planetary source. While Mariner and Viking images of Mars show volcanic structures of an appropriate age, and while a mechanism for the impact dislodging of Martian material has been proposed (and partially corroborated by the discovery of a lunar fragment in Antarctica and by Ar-isotope-ratio determinations on an Antarctic shergottite), conclusive confirmation of the hypothesis is found to require the analysis of actual Martian samples.
