We investigate two-dimensional higher-derivative gravitational theories in a Riemann- Cartan framework and show their equivalence with a first-order formulation with non-trivial potential. We obtain the most general solutions in the case of an action quadratic in torsion and discuss their geometry. We also consider the theory in the hamiltonian formalism and discuss its symmetries. We show that the models studied in this paper can be interpreted as gauge theories of non-linear generalizations of the two-dimensional Poincaré algebra. We finally review the Dirac quantization of the theory.
