It is pointed out that the study of point patterns in two dimensions is of extremely broad interest in both the natural and social sciences. The subjects to which this study has been applied include tree distributions in forests, bird nesting patterns, the growth of towns, crystal formation in rocks, and the distribution of galaxies on the sky. The present investigation is concerned with the particular example of the distribution of umbral dots and their similarity, or dissimilarity, to photospheric granules. Attention is given to a collection of N points in an area A, statistical comparisons of distributions, and studies conducted by Bumba and Suda (1980) and Adjabshirzadeh and Koutchmy (1980, 1982).
