Attention is given to both theoretical and experimental aspects. Mode-locking, which is the most common technique in the picosecond and sub picosecond regime, is discussed in detail. The general principles for the generation of ultrashort pulses are set forth, and the main generic techniques are considered; these include spontaneous mode-locking, active mode-locking, (including mode-locking by synchronous pumping), and passive mode-locking. The special topics treated include injection mode-locking, pulse compression and pulse slicing, and lasers with ultrashort cavities. Derivations are given for many of the key formulas required for the theoretical discussion.
