Five-spacecraft Themis observations are used to examine the radial properties of magnetic field and plasma parameters in the magnetotail during steady magnetospheric convection (SMC) events. Over 50 SMC events occurring during 2007-2008 Themis tail season were identified from a large database. Analysis of the plasma flow data show that the periods are associated with significant flow activity consisting of both Earthward and tailward flows. The tailward flows are concentrated in the midnight sector, while the Earthward flows are largest in the dawn and dusk sectors. The flow speeds are moderate, often not exceeding 200 km/s, and appear uncorrelated from spacecraft to spacecraft. The magnetic field structure shows stretching of the field, which proceeds during the events, leading to a decreasing trend in the Bz component as the events progress. These results are used to examine the conditions in the solar wind and magnetotail that lead to formation, sustainance, and ending of the SMC events.
