Scientific paper

Attention is given to recent insights into the basic mechanisms by which energy can be exchanged between different particle species in the collisionless magnetospheric or solar wind plasmas, with emphasis on interactions occurring in the equatorial magnetosphere between energetic protons and ULF waves linked with He(plus) ion trapping and heating as well as with field-aligned suprathermal electron beam generation. A discussion is also presented concerning the process by which ion conic distributions are produced by electrostatic ion cyclotron waves generated at high altitudes, along auroral field lines, by drifting electrons.
