The results from Type Ia supernovae show that the local volume is larger than expected for a matter-dominated cosmology. This result depends critically on the accuracy of the luminosity distances to Type Ia supernovae out to redshifts of z ~ 1. In this paper I shall review the properties of Type Ia supernovae as they apply to the measurement of luminosity distances.
