The reviews of cosmic ray studies conducted during the period from 1979 to 1982 cover a broad area reflecting the present scope of this discipline. The relationship of cosmic ray studies to solar-terrestrial physics encompasses an extremely wide range of interrelated and associated astrophysical phenomena from the sun, to the interplanetary medium and throughout the domain of the heliosphere. It is believed that the most noteworthy accomplishment in the considered quadrennium was achieved from a measurement made on board the Solar Maximum Mission (SMM) satellite. Solar neutrons were convincingly observed by the Gamma Ray Spectrometer on the SMM. Studies in solar physics were dominated by the multinational experiments on board the SMM and the coronagraph measurements on the P78-1 satellites. Attention is given to solar particle measurements at various distances from the sun, the association between energetic particles and shocks in te heliosphere, measurements of ultraheavy nuclei, and cosmic ray origin and propagation.
