The present investigation attempts to provide a brief summary of the efforts of scientists in the U.S. to understand the large-scale dynamics and climatology of the middle atmosphere, taking into account the reviewed literature between January 1979 and September 1982. It is pointed out that several new dynamical phenomena have been identified in the middle atmosphere. Earlier scattered observations of a two-day wave in the middle atmosphere have recently been confirmed by rocketsonde, meteor-wind, and satellite observations. Venne and Stanford (1979, 1982) have identified an eastward moving four-day wave which is confined to the wintertime polar stratopause region. Other developments discussed are related to large-scale waves and instabilities, long period oscillations in connection with equatorial wave, mean-flow interactions, sudden warmings related to extratropical wave mean-flow interaction, climatology and general circulation of the middle atmosphere, and the transport of trace chemicals.
