An analytical model is developed for charged particle collection by a cylindrically-shaped object, i.e., a spacecraft or an electrostatic probe, moving transversely through a collisionless plasma. Dimensionless ion currents are calculated for ion speed ratios from 0-10, for a range of ion-attracting collector potentials, for collector Debye ratios from 0-100, and for ion/electron temperature ratios of 0.5 and 1. The ranges were chosen to match those recorded in the ionosphere, while the Debye ratios match those of electrostatic probes, spacecraft, and rocket bodies. Parameter ranges are obtained for future exact calculations and an interpolation program is defined for automatic data-reduction systems.
