Wave-particle interactions have been shown to play a dominant role in the dynamical variability and equilibrium structure of the Earth’s radiation belts. Similar waves to those observed in the Earth’s environment are also excited in the vastly different magnetospheres of Jupiter and Saturn, suggesting a possible universality of such processes. A brief review is given of the process that cause the excitation of important waves in the planetary magnetosphere, and an assessment is made of their potential importance in radiation belt dynamics.
