Data from heliographic latitudes of 50 deg S to 60 deg N are used to demonstrate the anticorrelation between solar wind speed and coronal density. A relationship is revealed on timescales from 2 days to 1 year for the years 1972 to 1975. A quantitative point-by-point comparison is made of coronal density and solar wind velocity, and it appears that the solar wind is set between 1.2 and 1.5 solar radii, while the modulation is defined by the magnetic fields. It is demonstrated that denser regions have little part in determining the solar wind, and the large-scale structure of the interplanetary medium is probably governed by the large-scale magnetic field of the sun.
