Solar magnetic field measurements have sometimes been interpreted as indicating that the sun at times appears to be a magnetic monopole. The present work examines some findings which may indicate that instrumental effects may be responsible for magnetic field measurements suggesting a monopole. Magnetic field data obtained at Mt. Wilson for the period 1959-1973 were expanded into spherical harmonics, obtaining the Legendre coefficients. A superposed epoch analysis of the Legendre coefficients shows that the sun's spurious monopole varies with the solar declination. The combined influence of telescope and magnetograph errors should seem to account best for this observation.
