The physical properties of the cloud surrounding the solar system vary over timescales of <<105 years because both the Sun and interstellar clouds move through space. Within the past 103 to 105 years the Sun emerged from a large void (>80 parsecs radius)in interstellar gas and entered an outflow of material from the Scorpius-Centaurus Association. The absence of neutral gas in the void indicates that anomalous cosmic rays (E ~< 0.5 GeV/nucleon) would have been absent from the inner heliosphere when the Sun was in the void. Other temporal variations in the galactic environment of the Sun as affecting the heliosphere are discussed.
