The Large Observatory For X-ray Timing LOFT has been selected by ESA for an assessment study as part of the call for medium class mission. The main goal of the mission is to study the equation of State of suprio-nuclear matter and the strong field limit of General Relativity near neutron stars and black holes. In order to do this it will employ a very large detector with an effective area of 10 square meters with an energy resolution of 260 eV at 6 keV and an energy range between 2 and 50 keV. This instrument is supplemented by a coded mask instrument to identify and localize transient events which can be followed by an observation with the large area detector. We will describe the mission and its capabilities
