Many measurements of sodium in Mercury's atmosphere show abundances are higher in the morning than in the afternoon. Our data set consists of about 100 spectral images obtained at the Catalina observatory. This trend apparently supports the idea that sodium is outgassed from the regolith early in the day and then lost following photoionization and sweeping by electric fields in the solar wind. Some high abundances are observed at high north and south latitudes even in the afternoon. Our diurnal trend is best seen when equatorial and low latitude sectors are averaged.
