A laboratory experiment undergoing magnetic field line reconnection is used to perform spatial and temporal measurements of plasma pressure, magnetic force density, and ion velocities. Pressure is found to peak at the two edges of the neutral sheet and to exhibit large transverse gradients, causing space charge fields and Hall currents. Transverse currents and a magnetic field component are found, in addition to the induced axial neutral sheet currents and transverse magnetic field that are the primary sources, to give rise to the magnetic force density. The total force density of the fluid is compared with direct measurements of the fluid acceleration by means of differential particle detectors, and it is found that the ion acceleration is modified by scattering off wave turbulence. The classic flow pattern is developed by the fluid after several Alfven times, with jetting from the edges of the neutral sheet to velocities close to the Alfven speed.
