Concentrations of natural radioactive elements U, Th, and K in the Venusian mountain rocks were obtained by gamma ray spectrometers aboard the Vega 1 and Vega 2 descent modules that landed close to Mermaid Valley and the northeastern slope of Aphrodite Terra, respectively. The Vega-1 site compositions were as follows: K = 0.45 + or - 0.22 pct, U = 0.000064 + or 0.000047 pct, and Th = 0.00015 + or - 0.00012 pct. The Vega-2 site compositions were: K = 0.40 + or - 0.20 pct, U = 0.000068 + or - 0.000039 pct, and Th = 0.00020 + or - .00010 pct. Using the petrochemical classification of magmatic rocks based on the alkali-silica diagram, and the established relationship between the class of rocks and the content of natural radioactive elements, it is concluded that the chemical composition of the Venusian rocks studied is similar to that of basic rocks of the earth's crust, tholeiitic basalts and gabbros.
