It is pointed out that a considerable uncertainty exists as to whether or not the neutral temperature within a stable auroral red (SAR) arc is enhanced during the arc event. A description is provided of the results of photometric and interferometric measurements of an intense SAR arc observed at Albany, New York on the night of March 5/6, 1981. The measurements of the SAR arc were made with both a multicolor meridian scanning photometer and a 15-cm high-resolution Fabry-Perot interferometer. The observed enhancement of the temperature within the arc is much greater than the value predicted by two-dimensional model calculations of the SAR arc. The temperatures within the arc were quite stable in time and any difference of the temperatures within and outside the arc results mainly from rather rapidly changing temperatures outside the arc.
