An analysis of interplanetary plasma and magnetic field data from Helios-1 (for December 1974-December 1976), Helios-2 (for January-December 1976) and IMP-8 (for December 1974-December 1976) has led to the identification of some 85 cases of very low proton temperature. In 50 of these cases, characteristic variations favorable for closed structures in the solar wind were found in the interplanetary magnetic field. Cold protons, at 0.3 AU from the sun, were identified by using the calculated radial temperature gradients as a function of (1) the solar wind speed and (2) the heliocentric distance. The estimation of the 10 solar radii-distance at which regions of cold protons are formed shows that this distance is the same whether the solar wind plasma data used was measured in fixed or in varied heliocentric distances.
