An effective Lagrangian for the conformally coupled complex Klein-Gordon field in an expanding 3-flat Robertson-Walker universe is obtained and used to calculate exactly the probability of pair production in a vacuum. The exact result is obtained from the imaginary part of the effective action density without the application of regularization operations or manifest covariance. An approximation formula based on the WKB approximation is given for the pair creation probability, and it is applied to two expansion laws for the cosmological fields.
