During intense geomagnetic storms, active auroras tend to appear
abnormally early in the evening hours in the auroral zone. The
phenomenon is a natural consequence of the equatorward expansion of the
auroral oval. Active features of auroras can well be explained by
westward traveling surges which propagate along the expanded oval.
