The mechanism of proton acceleration in solar flares is discussed in relation to electron acceleration. It is pointed out that measurements of the arrival times of accelerated protons at the earth consistently reveal the solar protons to lag behind the solar electrons by periods of up to 40 min. To explain this delay, it is proposed that particle acceleration in solar flares occurs in two stages by the generation and discharge of a series of current sheets, in agreement with the proposition of Lin (1974).
