In quadrants I and IV of the Milky Way we have detected > 5000 Infrared Dark Clouds (IRDCs) using the MSX Galactic Plane Survey images at 8 μ m. Follow-up observations of a sample of the IRDCs in the millimeter-wave and sub-millimeter regions of the spectrum confirm initial estimates of the high density (>105 cm-3) and low temperature (~10 K) of the clouds. The distribution of the clouds maps known structures in the Galaxy (spiral arm tangents, the molecular ring).
