Scientific paper
This contribution discusses ISO spectroscopic observations of the Galactic Centre and the surrounding molecular ring, emphasizing the template role of the Galactic Centre region for extragalactic studies. An ageing starburst population is indicated by the low excitation fine structure line spectrum, consistent with results from the near-infrared stellar census. On closer inspection however, current stellar evolutionary tracks are found unable of accounting for ISO spectrum and near-infrared census. The Galactic Centre region allows spatially resolved studies of the mid-infrared PAH emission features. While they are absent in the intense radiation field of the very center, PAH features are detected from the molecular ring, providing a template of a PAH spectrum suffering high foreground extinction. Because of its well-known and fairly homogeneous foreground extinction, the Galactic Centre is uniquely suited for studies of the mid-infrared extinction law. Our results indicate significantly higher extinction in the 3-8 μ m region than usually assumed.
