The problem of crystal suspension in a convective magma ocean is studied by means of an energetic approach - it is necessary for convection to do some work against gravitational settling. Three regimes of convective suspensions are distinguished. When the energy dissipation due to the settling exceeds the heat loss from the convective layer, absolute or complete sedimentation occurs. When the energy dissipation due to the settling is less than the total heat loss but larger than the power which can be spent by convection on the crystal reentrainment process, a regime of partial differentiation occurs. The third regime is an absolute suspension which is capable of being sustained for an indefintely long period of time.
