An examination is conducted concerning the variations of the solar wind and the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) during some of the major geomagnetic storms which occurred between 1967 and 1974, thus including storms during both the maximum and the declining epoch of the sunspot cycle. It is found that the passage or a brief excursion of the warped solar current disk is often, but not always, associated with a large impulsive increase of the IMF magnitude and an increase in solar wind speed. A very large increase of the IMF magnitude occurs only during a very short period (6-24 hr). This is the main reason for the fact that very intense storms develop in such short periods
