Preliminary results are presented from a three dimensional simulation model of magnetized plasmas in the magnetosphere, in the ideal and resistive MHD approximation. The model is based on a finite element discretisation of the mass, momentum and energy equations using an unstructured tetrahedral mesh. The advantages of this approach, compared with the more familiar approaches using structured meshes or unstructured meshes with a fixed orientation, is discussed. In particular, it is shown that the mesh may be aligned along the magnetic field lines, thus preventing or greatly reducing unphysical diffusion in the direction perpendicular to the magnetic field. Example results are presented for the propagation of Shear Alfvén waves in the magnetosphere.
